Building Policies

After Hours Building Use Policy

UNM security personnel have expressed concern over students staying in the law school building after the building is closed and locked. This should not be happening.

  1. This statement of policy is required to ensure the safety of our students and of the people who provide campus security.
  2. When the building is closed, all students must leave the Law School. Staying in the building overnight is prohibited.
  3. Should the Dean, or his or her designee, give written permission to allow a student to stay in the building after hours, he or she shall notify UNM Police that permission has been granted.
  4. If a student is asked to leave the building by a security officer or by Law School personnel, that student shall leave immediately.

Policy established by Dean Scarnecchia on May 6, 2008

Smoking Policy

As of December 11, 2015 the UNM School of Law is now smoke and tobacco free.

Please be aware that the university's tobacco and smoke free policy applies “to all vehicles on University property, including privately owned vehicles, and all property owned, leased, operated, or under the control of UNM…” (Id.). This includes all of the law school’s parking lots, sidewalks and trails, lawns, seating areas, and the basketball court, as well as all of the interior spaces of the law school and the building housing The Institute of Public Law and NACA.

For those who may wish to use this policy change as impetus for quitting altogether, please see various campus resources available to support your effort:

Pet Policy

  1. Pets must be on a leash and under the constant supervision of their owner at all times. Pets MAY NOT be left in the patio or any other part of the building unattended while you are in class or otherwise occupied.
  2. Pets may not be tied or tethered to any University property.
  3. You must clean up after your pet immediately.
  4. Pets must be kept off of Law School and Law Library furniture at all times [policy amendment as of 4/14/14].
  5. Pets MAY NOT attend class, even if the professor says it’s OK. Other students are distracted and irritated by pets in the classroom and feel unable to contradict the professor on this subject.
  6. Most of all, please respect others in the building by not allowing your pet to disrupt or interfere with law school activities.

UNM Business Policy 2290 prohibits bringing any animals (other than service animals) into university buildings; however, the Dean has authorized an exception for the Law School buildings. Please ensure compliance with the Law School policy at all times so that we can continue to enjoy the privilege of having our pets visit the Law School.

Original policy established by Dean Scarnecchia on September 23, 2006, amended by Dean Herring on April 14, 2014.

Recycling

Recycle Bins

Recycle bins are placed throughout the Law School; faculty and staff have small blue recycle bins in their offices which they periodically dump into a larger collection bin. The computer labs have recycle bins as does the mail room. The Copy Center has large recycle bins and collects all recycled materials.

Bins are located outside of every classroom. Please carry all waste and recyclable materials out of the classroom and place them in the appropriate bins.

What We Can Recycle

Paper

  • Place all colored and white paper in any blue, yellow or white recycling bin.
  • Place newspapers in a separate bin, box, or bag.
  • Place magazines and books together in a separate bin, box or bag.
  1. Remove any plastic wrapping.
  2. You do not have to remove staples, paper clips or sticky notes.
  3. Shredded paper must be bagged and stacked next to the bins in the Copy Center. Recycling has small free bags that can be used for shredded paper. If you have a big shredding job and need help, call Roadrunner Paper at 764-9832.

Cardboard

All cardboard (thick, thin or colored) is recyclable. Flatten down and then place beside the Copy Center bins.

Aluminum, Glass, Plastic, Tin

There are tall cardboard recycling bins (with the round holes) placed in the Forum and elsewhere in the law school. Please dispose of the liquid and throw away all caps.

Printer and Copier Cartridges

Cartridges are refurbished and reused. Bring your printer and copier cartridges from home to the Copy Center. The UNM recycling program gets income from this process.

CD's

Place in a zip-lock plastic bag, stacked next to the recycle bins.

Styrofoam

Bag styrofoam peanuts and bag or tape together large styrofoam blocks (i.e., computer packing). Place next to the bins located in the Copy Center.

Nickel Cadmium (nicad or rechargeable) Batteries

Place in a zip-lock plastic bag and call 277-0316 to arrange for a pickup.

Telephone Directories

The Law School arranges an annual pick up.

Recycling in the Law School Mail Room

There are three yellow color bins under the table. Most incoming mail contains color; you can put white paper in the colored bins as well.

What We Cannot Recycle - Throw Away

  1. The wax copy paper wrappers.
  2. Styrofoam plates, cups, bowls or egg cartons.
  3. Alkaline batteries.

UNM Recycling Resources

The UNM Office of Sustainability lists additional guidelines and are happy to discuss recycling issues or help with special projects.

Equipment Recycling

The IT Department sends used computer equipment to UNM Surplus. If improperly disposed, PCs can leak toxins into the environment, including lead, cadmium, chromium and mercury.

Law School Toner and Xerox cartridges are shipped to the originating company for disposal.

Recycling Oversight Committee

Contact the Law School Building & Safety Committee with questions, suggestions and comments.
