Law Library After Hours Access Policies and Procedures

UNM law students who completed after hours safety training during Orientation may access the Library 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To schedule a makeup training session, email Rob Thomas or call at 272-1485.

Law Students, the following policies apply to After Hours access to the UNM Law Library:

  1. Outside posted business hours, the only entrance to and non-emergency exit from the Library is through the Student Entrance Door.
  2. The Student Entrance Door is controlled by a card reader. Each student must attend After Hours Safety Training, sign a waiver of liability, and sign a document stating they have received a copy of these policies before their LoboCard will be activated for After Hours access. This privilege extends for three months after graduation. It is a violation of the Honor Code to provide access to anyone who does not have an activated LoboCard (this includes friends, family members, and other students whose cards are not activated).
  3. To enter, place your LoboCard on the card reader. To exit, push the crash bar to open the door. Do not prop open or otherwise leave open the Student Entrance Door.
  4. All library users are required to exit the Library when it closes. After exiting, law students with activated LoboCards may return via the Student Entrance Door. Students may not ask employees to let them stay in the Library at closing time; this includes students working in the Journal offices that are located within the Library.
  5. The Library is not staffed after posted business hours:
    • The Library’s study rooms, computer lab, scanners, copiers, and printers are available after hours.
    • Material from the Course Reserve and Desk Reserve collections (behind the Circulation Desk) is not available after hours. Items from these collections must be checked out before the Library closes.
    • Library lights remain on after closing. Because lights on the lower floor are controlled by motion detectors, some areas may appear dark until you enter and the lights may occasionally turn off if you are in an area but have not moved.
    • Beverages must be in spill-proof containers. Report all food and beverage spills immediately so cleaning and stain treatment can be implemented promptly.
  6. During posted business hours the Student Entrance Door is alarmed and may only be used as an emergency exit.
  7. After posted business hours the Library front doors (exiting into the Forum) are locked and alarmed. It is a violation of the Honor Code to attempt to gain access to the rest of the building through the Library front doors after the Library is closed. The only exception to this rule is when the doors must be used as an emergency exit.
  8. In an emergency, call 911
    • For 911 calls use personal cell phones or the phones at the Circulation Desk or Reference Desk.
    • Report problems with the building (broken window, leaks etc.) to the UNM Police Non-Emergency number (277-2241).
    • Use the UNM Security Escort Service (277-2241) or walk in groups if you are on campus in the evenings. More information regarding UNM Security Escort Service is available at UNM Campus Police.
  9. Video cameras record activity at the Student Entrance Door for later review by Law School personnel. Security personnel do not monitor it in real time.
  10. Violations of any of these policies or destruction or removal of Library materials or equipment are also Honor Code violations and may result in loss of your After Hours access privileges.
